(AP) MONTERREY, Mexico - A 25-year-old man bit off more than he could chew when he allegedly stole a gold bracelet from an 8-year-old girl and then swallowed the evidence, police in northern Mexico said Tuesday.

Jose Rigoberto Cruz Salas was being administered laxatives to recover the evidence at a jail in a suburb of the northern city of Monterrey, said state police officials who not authorized to be quoted by name.

Cruz Salas admitted to the Sunday theft, said police, who arrested him on Monday. He told the local newspaper, El Norte, that he had swallowed the bracelet when he saw them coming.

“I just suddenly ate it. I saw the patrol car and the only thing that occurred to me was to swallow it,” Cruz Salas said, according to the newspaper.

Police ordered an x-ray of his stomach, which revealed the stolen jewelry.

He faces robbery charges, punishable by a fine or a jail term of six months to 15 years — depending on the bracelet’s value. Its worth could not be immediately determined.

(AP) TUXTLA GUTIERREZ, Mexico - A donkey is doing time in southern Mexico for assault and battery.

The animal was locked up at a local jail that normally holds people for public drunkenness and other disturbances after it bit and kicked two men near a ranch in Chiapas state, police said Monday.

Officer Sinar Gomez said the donkey will remain behind bars until its owner agrees to pay the men’s medical bills.

“Around here, if someone commits a crime they are jailed,” Gomez said — “no matter who they are.”

(AP) PROVO, Utah - A newspaper photographer got a little too close to the action at the state high school track championships — and was speared through the leg by a javelin.

Ryan McGeeney of the Standard-Examiner was spared serious injury in Saturday’s mishap, and even managed to snap a photo of his speared leg while others worked to help him.

“If I didn’t, it would probably be my editor’s first question when I got back,” McGeeney said later.

The 33-year-old McGeeney, an ex-Marine who spent six months in Afghanistan, was taking pictures of the discus event and apparently wandered into off-limits area set aside for the javelin throw.

Striking just below the knee, the javelin tip went through the skin and emerged on the other side of his leg.

(AP) MORRIS, IL. - Police say a trailer loaded with 14 tons of double-stuffed Oreos has overturned, spilling the cookies still in their plastic sleeves into the median and roadway.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Brian Mahoney says the truck’s driver was traveling from Chicago to Morris on Interstate 80 around 4 a.m. Monday when he fell asleep at the wheel and slammed into the median.

“The boxes came out of the trailer and boxes were ripped open,” he said.

The crash about 50 miles southwest of Chicago remains under investigation.

Mahoney says no charges have been filed but both lanes of traffic remain closed while authorities remove the cookies.

A seal has been caught on camera trying to have sex with a penguin.

This seems to be the first example seen in the wild of a sexual escapade between a mammal and a different kind of vertebrate such as a bird, reptile or fish, “although some mammals are known to have attempted sexual relief with inanimate — including dead things — objects,” said researcher Nico de Bruyn, a mammal ecologist at the University of Pretoria in South Africa.

One summer morning, scientists observing elephant seals on a beach on Marion Island near the Antarctic spotted a young male Antarctic fur seal subduing a king penguin.
